Size Guide

Last updated:

Choosing the right size makes a personalized gift feel just right: a mug that suits the way someone drinks their coffee, an ornament that holds every name without crowding, a sign that fits the wall it was meant for. This guide explains how to choose between the size options you see on Hugs Made product pages, how much text suits each kind of gift, and how to care for your gift so the personalisation stays clear for years. The exact sizes and dimensions available for each design are always listed on its product page; when a product page and this guide differ, the product page is correct for that item.

Size guide at a glance

  • Size options: chosen on the product page before you add to cart; personalisation goes in the Order notes box at checkout.
  • Mugs: 11 oz is the everyday size; 15 oz, where offered, suits big coffee and tea drinkers.
  • Ornaments, figures and signs: Small, Medium and Large options, where offered, are described with their measurements on each product page.
  • Wrong size? Return it within 60 days with a free return label and reorder the size you prefer.
  • Not sure? Email support@hugsmade.shop with the product and your text before ordering.

1. How size options work on Hugs Made

When a design comes in more than one size, the product page shows a size option above the Add to cart button. Choose the size there. The names, dates and message you want on the gift are typed later, in the Order notes box at checkout. Size options use the same labels across the store so you can compare designs easily:

Size labels used on Hugs Made product pages
LabelUsed forWhere to find exact measurements

MediumOrnaments, figures, signs and decorProduct page of each design

Because every design is different, a “Medium” ornament and a “Medium” sign are not the same size. Always check the measurements on the product page of the design you are choosing.

2. Choosing a mug size

When 11 oz is the right choice

The 11 oz mug is the classic everyday size. It suits a standard cup of coffee or tea, fits comfortably in most cupboards and under most coffee machines, and is easy to hold for people of all ages. It is the safe choice when you are not sure about someone’s habits, and it suits short personalisation such as one name, a nickname or a name with a date.

When 15 oz is worth it

Where a design offers 15 oz, choose it for someone who refills their mug all morning, drinks large lattes or tea with plenty of milk, or likes soup in a mug at lunch. The larger surface also gives a little more room for longer personalisation, such as a list of grandchildren’s names.

Quick ways to decide

  • Look at the mug they use every day. If it is noticeably larger than an ordinary mug, 15 oz may suit them.
  • Check whether the mug needs to fit under a particular coffee machine; if so, the everyday size is usually safer.
  • For older hands, a lighter everyday mug is often easier to lift when full.
  • For matching sets, such as mugs for siblings, choose the same size for all of them so the names line up.

3. Choosing an ornament size

Ornaments are about the tree as much as the gift. A small ornament nestles among other decorations; a larger one becomes a focal point. Think about:

  • How many names. One or two names suit a small ornament. A whole family, pets included, reads better on a medium or large one.
  • The tree. Larger ornaments hang best on sturdy branches near the front of the tree; small ones suit tabletop trees and thinner branches.
  • The material. Depending on the design, ornaments are offered in acrylic, ceramic or wood. The product page describes each.
  • Keeping it. Memorial and first-Christmas ornaments are kept for years; choose a size that is easy to store safely between seasons.

4. Choosing a keepsake figure size

Keepsake figures live on shelves, desks, mantels and bedside tables. Before choosing, picture the exact spot. Measure the depth of the shelf and the space above it, and compare with the measurements on the product page. Larger figures often have room for a longer name plaque or more detail, while smaller ones are easy to place anywhere and to pack if someone moves home.

5. Choosing a sign or decor size

Family signs and decor are the gifts where size matters most, because they need to fit a wall, a door or a shelf. A few practical steps:

  1. Measure the space where the sign will go: width, height and, for shelves, depth.
  2. Compare with the measurements on the product page and leave some breathing room around the sign.
  3. Think about viewing distance. A sign above a front door is read from further away than one on a hallway shelf, so a larger size keeps the names readable.
  4. For pillows and blankets, check the measurements against the sofa or bed they are meant for.

6. How much text fits

Every design has a limited space for personalisation. Short text always looks better than crowded text. As a general guide:

Text that usually reads well, by gift type
GiftUsually reads wellConsider a larger size or shorter text when
MugA title such as “Grandma” plus a few names, or a short messageYou have a long list of names or a full sentence
Small ornamentOne or two names and a yearYou want every family member’s name
Larger ornamentA family’s names and a yearYou also want a long message
Keepsake figureOne or two names and a date on the plaqueNames are very long
Family signA surname and a year, or several first namesNames must be read from across a room

Long lists may be set in a smaller type to fit the design. If your text is long, email us before ordering with the product and your text, and we will tell you honestly how it will look. We do not send a proof before production, so asking first is the best way to be sure.

7. Writing personalisation that fits

  • Use nicknames when they are shorter and more personal: “Nana” instead of “Grandmother”.
  • Use numbers for dates, such as “06.14.2014”, when space is tight.
  • Keep messages to a few words, such as “Love you more” or “Our first home”.
  • For several items, label each set of details in the order notes so each gift gets the right text.

8. If the size is not right

If the size you chose turns out to be too small or too large, you can return it within 60 days with a free return label, even though the reason is a change of mind. Then place a new order in the size you prefer; store credit, which never expires, makes this easy. Your refund for the returned item is issued within 7 days of receiving it. See our Returns & Exchanges Policy and Refund Policy.

If you notice the wrong size within 24 hours of ordering, email us and we will change it before production. See Cancel or Change an Order.

9. Caring for your gift

Mugs

Follow the care notes on the product page. Printed designs keep their colours longest with gentle hand washing. Avoid abrasive sponges on the printed area, and let the mug cool before washing if it has just been in the microwave, where the product page says it is microwave-safe.

Ornaments

Dust with a soft, dry cloth. Between seasons, wrap each ornament in tissue and store it in a sturdy box, away from heavy items, damp and direct heat.

Figures

Keep figures on a stable surface away from the edge of shelves. Clean with a soft brush or dry cloth; avoid water and cleaning sprays on painted details.

Signs and decor

Hang signs with fixings suited to the wall and the sign’s weight. Keep printed surfaces out of strong direct sunlight to help colours last. For fabric items, follow the care label or product page instructions.

10. Size ideas by occasion

  • Mother’s Day mug for a grandmother with many grandchildren: the 15 oz size, where offered, gives the names more room; the 11 oz suits a short title and two or three names.
  • First Christmas ornament for newlyweds: a small or medium ornament with two names and the year reads beautifully.
  • Family ornament with every member and the pets: a medium or large ornament keeps each name readable.
  • Anniversary keepsake for parents: choose a figure size that suits their shelf or mantel; two names and a date fit most plaques.
  • Housewarming sign: measure the wall first; a surname and the year are easy to read even from across a room.
  • Memorial ornament for a grieving friend: a small or medium size is easy to hang on any tree and to keep safely all year.

11. Photo gifts and size

For photo gifts, the size of the gift and the quality of the photo work together. A larger gift shows more of the photo, but it also shows any blur or noise more clearly. Use the original photo rather than a screenshot or a photo saved from a messaging app, choose one where faces are sharp and well lit, and leave some space around the people so nothing important is cropped. Paste a shareable link to the photo in the Order notes box at checkout, and check that it opens without a login. If you are unsure whether a photo is sharp enough for the size you want, send us the link before ordering.
